Plant selection is both art and science as so many factors must be considered. Our plant selection criteria for the Pollinator Garden at the Memorial Centre included:
- Attractive to pollinators such as birds, bees, and butterflies
- Suitability for the site (sunny and dry)
- Low maintenance; drought tolerant; hardy in our climate zone (5b)
- Primarily, though not exclusively native plants
- Availability – we were fortunate to get many of our plants from the Native Plant Nursery at Lemoine Point and divisions from members gardens
- Diversity in colour, height, and bloom time – aiming for continuous bloom
- Attractive to humans – to inspire gardeners to add pollinator-friendly plants to their own gardens
